Join us in standing against violence & injustice
On 24 August, Snehalaya joined the national outcry around the horrific incidents of sexual violence against women that has once again hit the headlines. Despite us and others working to end gender-based violence and empower women and children (which we have been doing since 1989), the issues and incidents continue.
A powerful gathering of Ahmednagar social organizations and citizens took place at the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Maliwada. UNfortunately gender-based violence remains prevalent but the recent tragic cases of a female trainee doctor in Kolkata and a little girl from Badlapur served as the catalyst for this unified rally, drawing attention to the urgent need for justice and protection of women and children.
Among the prominent voices in this movement, Snehalaya was represented by Meenakshi Pawar and Vidya Ghorpade, two experts in the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Those gathered passionately demanded the strict enforcement of the law and immediate punishment of perpetrators of such heinous crimes. Their call for the empowerment of women through comprehensive training programs highlighted the essential tools needed to combat the systemic issues that perpetuate violence and discrimination against women.
The turnout from socially conscious citizens of all ages, united in solidarity for the cause, was remarkable. Participants held posters expressing their indignation and calls for justice, amplifying the message that society will not tolerate such atrocities any longer. The banners bore slogans and messages demanding not only justice for the victims but also a commitment from authorities to ensure the safety and dignity of women and children.
The rally was not just a response to specific incidents but was symbolic of a larger struggle against the pervasive culture of violence that many women endure daily. It underscored the importance of collective action in the fight against injustice, reminding everyone present that change is only possible when voices are united.
As we navigate these challenging times, the message of the rally is clear: we must work together to create a future where women can live free from the threat of violence. Safety, justice, and the empowerment of all individuals are not just ideals; they are the rights that every person deserves. This gathering was a powerful reminder of our collective responsibility to ensure that our society is a safe haven for all, especially the most vulnerable.
Together, we are stronger in the fight against injustice. Together, we stand "United for Justice." Let's keep the momentum going, reinforcing our commitment to change, and ensuring that no one faces violence in silence. The work is far from over, but the unity displayed at the rally gives hope for a brighter and safer future for all.
