Preventing Child Marriage

A Successful Intervention in Shevgaon's Mamta Lawns

In a recent incident in Shevgaon, in our Ahmednagar District, our Udaan project joined local authorities to successfully prevent a child marriage.

On July 22, just moments before a 17-year-old girl was set to be married to a 24-year-old man, responsible citizens reached out to our dedicated helpline, prompting immediate action from our Udaan team. With just ten minutes before the ceremony was to commence, police from Shevgaon station, representatives from the Integrated Child Development Department and our Udaan team rushed to the scene.

Upon arrival, the authorities discovered that the ceremony had already started. They found crowds of relatives gathered for the traditional customs preceding the marriage underway making it evident that further proceedings needed to be stopped immediately. The police requested documentation to verify the ages of the bride and groom, which revealed that the marriage was indeed being arranged in violation of the legal age stipulations.

Initial resistance to the authorities' intervention surfaced as some attendees attempted to intimidate them with their connections to political figures. However, the police and Udaan team remained resolute, undeterred by attempts to pressure them into allowing the child marriage to proceed. They insisted on protocol, and as a precaution, took both families and all parties involved in the wedding arrangements to the local police station.

At the station, officials engaged in discussions with the families about the implications of child marriage and legal ramifications. Officers ensured that the bride was provided with the care, support and protection she needed, emphasizing the importance of her wellbeing over traditional practices.

As part of the intervention, the authorities also communicated the child marriage prevention laws more broadly to all involved parties — including those who typically facilitate weddings, such as event organizers, musicians and caterers. This awareness raiding helps to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the legal landscape surrounding child marriages.

The steadfast actions of the Shevgaon police, combined with the diligence of community stakeholders and awareness programs, underscore the critical importance of vigilance in preventing child marriages. This incident serves as a powerful reminder of the community's role in safeguarding the rights of children and promoting their wellbeing above all else.

As efforts continue through Udaan to educate the public on child rights, this successful intervention highlights the potential for positive change when individuals come together to stand against societal issues like child marriage. With continued vigilance and collaborative efforts, we can foster an environment where every child is protected and allowed to thrive.
