Visit our Rehab Center mid to late afternoon and you should be rewarded with the delicious aromas of the baked goods browning in the ovens of our on-site bakery. This is the latest offering in our SKVK vocational skills training program with the first batch of our residents learning the whole range of baking skills that will secure them future jobs in the food industry.
Stay a little longer and you may even be treated to the samples of fresh out-of-the-oven treats. If you arrive too late there is still the chance to try out the packaged goods on display to visitors. These include favourites such as cream rolls, Shrewsbury cookies, pastry puffs and a range of biscuits, cakes and breads. The trainees are enthusiastic, engaged and up for the challenge of special requests such as birthday cakes and pav (bread rolls) for distribution from our own dining hall, visitors and guests.
Baking teacher Shavinash conducts the two-month program which develops a range of skills and knowledge that should lead on to employment, including:
Basic ingredients such as wheat, butter, sugar and rising agents and how they react in the baking process.
Cooking processes
Hygiene
How to fix mistakes
Equipment
Methods
While the young people are learning a new skill and trying out a vast range of baking skills we are also enjoying the fruits of their efforts and taste-testing their creations.
