1,602 villages to end child marriage

Our Udaan has been working hard over the past month as they work to fulfil our mission to end child marriage in our district by 2027. Unfortunately, there is an increasing prevalence of the practice in our district, which still ranks among one of the country’s highest areas for child marriage. As well as inspiring those attending our five day youth camp to join our mission they have also been all over our district to gather pledges of support.

We cannot achieve our goal alone and have been working with government stakeholders, the district administration and allied systems to deliver letters to each of the 1,602 villages in Ahmednagar District requesting a resolution to prevent child marriage to be made in each Gram Sabha on Independence Day.

To ensure the success of the "My Village Child Marriage Free Village" campaign, revenues from the 1,341 Gram Panchayats will be distributed to the 1,602 villages and under the guidance of the Chief Executive Officer of Ahmednagar Zilla Parishad, Group Development Officer, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Gram Panchayat Division and Chief Executive Officer District the decision to pass a "Child Marriage Prohibition Resolution" in each village's Gram Sabha on Independence Day. We are happy to report that the Group Development Officer of all the Panchayat Samiti in the city district and the Village Sevak of the Gram Panchayat have taken the initiative to create public awareness campaigns about child marriage and passed our resolution to prevent child marriage in all the villages.

The Prohibition of Child Marriage Resolution is as follows:

  1. It will be mandatory to submit proof of date of birth of the bridegroom such as official birth certificate / school leaving transcript / school records before marriage at Gram Panchayat office. After getting the age proofs, the village child marriage prevention committee will verify the age and register the marriage.

  2. It is compulsory to register every marriage in the village whether a girl or a boy is married in or outside the village.

  3. We are passing a resolution to implement the campaign "My Village, Child Marriage Free Village" so that child marriage does not take place in our village.

In a follow-up event for Rakshabandhan, our Udaan and Snehadhar teams collaborated to organise an awareness campaign on women’s safety, social responsibility and moral duty in our local colleges and through the crowded areas of our city.
